Who is prone to pressure ulcers?
Pressure ulcers can affect anyone, but generally we can talk about the risk group which includes:
- all persons with reduced mobility
- bedridden patients
- persons with damaged nervous system
- mentally impaired persons
- incontinent persons
- diabetics
- persons weakened by long-lasting illnesses
Due to loss of pain sensation or exhaustion, such patients often do not move their bodies, so the pressure of bones on the weakened skin, subcutaneous and muscle tissue is increased.
Pressure ulcers are graded on a scale from 1 to 4. Check-ups have to be done on a daily basis, with all patients with risk of developing pressure ulcers, all bedridden patients or patients in wheelchairs or those who spend most of the day sitting.
