Considering the upright human posture, there are several factors needed for blood to overcome gravity and reach the heart.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The muscles of the lower leg function as a pump with a vital function of returning blood to the heart. The muscle contracts and presses the veins between the muscles and squeezes them. There is less space in the veins for blood, so it is pushed towards the heart.<\/p>\n<p>The venous valves open under pressure and let blood flow.
